WHAT IS POLYCOTTON BLEND FABRIC?

Polycotton is a blend of durable polyester and luxurious cotton. This blend combines the strength of both cotton and polyester fibers in a varying ratio. The most popular combination is 65% cotton and 35% polyester. Polycotton is one of the most popular blended fabrics and is widely used to make home textile products like quilt covers, bed sheets, and pillowcases.

The presence of natural fibers (cotton) guarantees it to be environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic, and synthetic fibres (polyester) make the fabric wrinkle-free. Cotton threads give the fabric a nice touch and softness while the polyester fibres create the crisp texture. This fabric combines the softness and moisture-wicking properties of cotton with the durability and wrinkle-free properties of polyester.
Polycotton is a reliable choice because of its long lifetime and high durability, which set it apart from completely natural fabrics. The blend of polyester and cotton creates a very thin and lightweight fabric that allows a fluent airflow. This blend creates quilt covers and bed sheets that are both comfortable and easy to maintain. Polycotton dries faster so you can get your bed ready sooner.

The presence of cotton fibres makes polycotton bedding soft and smooth. The cotton-polyester sheets are much softer than the polyester sheets and microfibre sheets. The cotton-polyester sheets are very durable that makes them unlikely to tear or rip easily. The softness and durability make polycotton a popular choice for bedsheets in commercial settings like hotels and hospitals.

DOES POLYCOTTON SHRINK?

Polycotton is not subject to shrinkage because of the polyester fibres. Polyester is made of synthetic polymer which makes it resistant to shrinkage. If the ratio of cotton is very high, you can get some shrinking. Although, this shrinkage can never be as much as the 100% cotton will shrink. If it’s the popular combination of 65% cotton and 35% polyester, you might get some shrinkage but the percentage will not be more than 2–3%. On the contrary, if it’s 65% polyester and 35% cotton, shrinkage is unlikely to happen

If you’re worried that your favorite polycotton quilt cover may shrink, you must opt to dry clean your quilt. As there is no water used in dry cleaning, so there will be no shrinkage either.

HOW TO SOFTEN POLYCOTTON FABRIC?

Polycotton fabric unlike cotton fabric, resist wrinkles. The manufacturers blend cotton with polyester for the smooth, soft feel without the wrinkles that come with pure cotton fabric. However, new polycotton bedding may be stiff when taken out of the package because of the chemical treatments and dyes.

To soften your new polycotton bedding, you must properly wash and dry it to help remove such chemicals. Even if you don’t use fabric softener, you will get your polycotton bedding clean and soft.

IS POLYCOTTON STRETCHABLE?

Cotton fibres are less stretchier than polyester fibres. So, if the ratio of cotton is higher than polyester, the fabric doesn’t stretch much. Polycotton fabric can be stretchable, but it depends on the exact blend or ratio of cotton and polyester.
Moreover, stretchability depends on the yarn and fabric construction. The type of fibre used in the textile material also decides the stretchability of the fabric. Fabric may be woven or knitted. Because of the inter-looping of the yarn during manufacturing, the knitted fabric has higher stretchability than woven fabric.
As a matter of fact, fibre plays a very minor role in the stretchability of the fabric. The fibres like cotton, polyester, and viscose have very little elasticity. On the other hand, wool and nylon have some acceptable levels of stretchability. However, it doesn’t affect the fabric stretchability significantly. Logically, knitted polycotton fabric has higher stretchability than woven polycotton fabric.
